ABU DHABI TO NEW YORK

Flying close to North Pole. The best route on that day, avoiding the head wind, cut the flight time, reduce the fuel burnt, most economical. This route is not always the same, planner , after analising the weather especially the upper air wind, will choose the best route.

Hi captain,

Congratulation of being appointed to the left seat (although it has been quite a while now, pardon me). You're the first Malaysian with four bar epaulets whom
I know to be captain-ing the A345/346. I bet it is an exciting one compare to the other series. I always have a soft spot for A345/346. Been flown in TG & EK
before, it's sad to see these beauties are becoming rare nowadays. I really hope EY, LH and other operators keep these birds a little longer.

It's very interesting to see your routing for OMAA-KJFK. I've never been routed (in Flight Simulator of course!) through Greeland for such route
or even for KORD sector. In fact, there are only a few filed flight plan online which often favourable to go further south. I was wondering if you can,
by any chance, to be able to provide filed route for the sector. Considering there're limitations for NDB and the FMS for the Wilco Airbus Series
(the programme I've been using), it's nearly impossible to create a realistic flight plan. However, it would be interesting to get your response
on:

1. For North Atlantic Crossing, I'm aware that you should be getting Gander/Shanwick Oceanic clearance to do so.
Will the clearence be asked verbally or should it be requested through the comm?

2. In the case of extreme rarity (i.e. clearance was denied/airspace closure/ashcloud) what you should do?

3. Was this route flown by A346 HGW? Would it be possible to have a normal A346 plying this route without any weight penalty?

Regards,
Nik

Tq for your interest Farhan, most us Airbus pilot in Etihad are multi rated. I am rated on 340-600,500, 330-200/300/33X ( cargo) .

If you want to see my operational flight plan for this particular route, I can email you a copy when , so please send me your email add.
There are two options for this sector, either following the Organized Tracks System OTS or random route. Both mainly using Lat/Long over the Atlantic since no VOR or NDB available for suitable aids to be used for airways. RNAV and GPS mandotary.

Answer:
1. Clearance normally via data link, CPDLC, however, by voice also can be done using HF or VHF if within range.
2. Rerouting is normal over Atlantic.
3. We departed from OMAA so by the time reaching over Atlantic, weight is not an issue anymore. Even B777 also being used now for KORD and CYYZ. Next will be A345 doing Washington somewhere next year.

Another thing, the jet stream always flowing from west to East around 40 deg to 50 deg N , thats why the routes to the West mostly on the North Atlantic side, coming back will be on the this sector.

Hope this will help you. Cheers.

Many thanks for your response Captain! It would be great to take a look at the OFP. Here is my email: hh_munro_saki@yahoo.co.uk

Glad to hear A345 will be doing KIAD next year. I also heard A346 is slated for SBGR next year too. This couldn't be any better!

Keep on posting Captain. I'd trade anything to be in the office like yours. And of course for the all the perks of flying.

Cheers.
